I am very proud of what the boys accomplished, but I can’t say that I don’t have some conflicting feelings about the amount of games these boys are playing[...]
I love baseball and have been coaching it for over 25 years. My older son played professionally and now I going though the little league system with my nine year old. Boy have things changed. Many changes are good, but the amount of games I see them playing is approaching a danger level. We have set a limit on the amount of playing with practice for 2 hours once a week and one touranment in Sept and one in Oct. We are also playing flag fb and I think kids are getting away from enjoying other sports/activities. One thing about the older (hs) players is the need to have an off season. The off season is the best time to do skill development and to gain strenght. During the season is hard to maintain a workout, which you should, but you can not make the same gains as in the off season. A good long toss program for at least 8-10 weeks is also important in the off season. “CP “
I’d have to agree with Mike. Working out during the season is difficult, although one of the best ways to do so is to sneak in a workout or two inbetween weekend games or longer weekend tournaments. That seems to work for my team of 10 – 11 year olds.
